Sandy Shenanigans is a three-bedroom oceanside cottage in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, with a private hot tub that runs year round, a movie room with a real projector, and a fire pit ringed with navy Adirondack chairs. Sleeps nine. Dogs welcome.
Sandy Shenanigans is the kind of Outer Banks week your family starts measuring other vacations against.
Three minutes. That is how long the walk takes from the front door to the Bonnett Street public beach access, and you will make it a dozen times this week with sunscreen in one hand and the beach wagon rattling along behind you. The wagon, the chairs, the umbrella, the boogie boards and the sand toys all live here, so the car goes home with room to spare.
Come back sandy and rinse off under the outdoor shower. Somebody claims the private hot tub, which runs year round. Somebody else heads for the covered game area, where the JOOLA ping pong table and the foosball table sit out of the wind under string lights. After dark everyone ends up at the fire pit in the six navy Adirondack chairs, or in the movie room, where a ceiling-mounted projector fills a full-size screen for the rainy afternoon nobody planned for.
Inside, the main floor stays open and easy. A farmhouse table seats the whole group at once, a skylight keeps the kitchen bright, and the coffee station is stocked with a Keurig, a K-cup carousel, and branded Sandy Shenanigans mugs. Kill Devil Hills sits at the center of the northern Outer Banks, so nothing on the island turns into a long drive.
A three-minute walk to the Bonnett Street public beach access, with a wooden walkway and rinse showers waiting on the way home.
Open 24 hours and heated every month of the year, so October evenings and March mornings are fair game too.
Lounge chairs, shade umbrellas, and a slight ocean view. The king suite opens right onto it through sliding glass doors.
A ceiling-mounted projector and a full-size screen turn a rained-out afternoon into the part of the trip everyone remembers.
A JOOLA ping pong table and a foosball table, walled against the wind and strung with lights, so tournaments run past dinner.
Six navy Adirondack chairs under string lights in the private backyard. This is where the grown-ups stay after the kids go up.

Check AvailabilityThe beach wagon, the chairs, the umbrella, the boogie boards and the sand toys are already here, along with the coffee, the cooking basics, and the extra blankets. Nothing about a week in Kill Devil Hills should start with a supply run.

See Open Dates"We were all very pleased with the home's cleanliness, furnishings, supplies, and grounds. The hosts have invested in the property and their attentiveness to detail was evident. There were ample beach chairs, umbrellas, and toys, and a sturdy cart to tote it all to the walkable beach. Fully recommended."

Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina sits at the center of the northern Outer Banks, with restaurants and a grocery store walkable and the rest of the island an easy drive in either direction. Most of our guests make the drive down from Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and every one of these is worth the day.
A mile from the front door, the kids can walk the actual distance of the first flight, stone marker to stone marker, and understand in about four seconds why this field matters.
Climb the tallest sand dune on the East Coast barefoot before dinner, watch the hang gliders drift down toward the sound, and let everyone roll back to the parking lot the fast way.
Shaded trails wind through maritime forest and freshwater ponds behind the dunes, cool and green and quiet enough that the kids start whispering without being asked.
Walk a thousand feet out over the Atlantic with a rental rod and a bucket, and spend the evening watching pelicans work the swells while somebody in the family finally catches something.
A rainy afternoon fix on Roanoke Island, with the aquarium's otters and shark tank, a small harbor lined with sailboats, and ice cream on the boardwalk on the way back to the car.
The black and white tower at the top of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, where you can climb 214 steps for the view, then follow the marsh boardwalk out to look for herons.
